MARIA LUIXA MORANDO

ARTIST STATEMENT

ust after 9/11 I took a walk around Hyde Park, feeling very nebulous. It was there that I realized that I no longer wanted “detail”; I wanted to remove the constant clutter and ceaseless noise that surrounds and binds us.

In that moment I wanted to photograph the world without the detail. This was the moment when my work transformed into what you see today; moments distilled without the detail. By overexposing the camera, my world becomes clutter free, enabling the viewer to experience the moment and therefore really see it, feel it and connect with it. Like memories, these images have the seemingly counter-intuitive qualities of being highly defined, yet at the same time, being impossible to get close to, no matter how much the viewer tries.

By removing the clutter, the viewer is freed up to respond to the work almost as if they can hear the image. Without the surplus detail, the other senses can come into play, making it easier to hear the waves, feel the heat of the sunlight and taste the salt air. The lack of clutter gives tranquility about the work.

The White Series asks the viewer to pause, to rest, to breathe; and to experience, for a blissful moment, a world without clutter.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Marialuisa Morando was born in Warwickshire, England and earned a distinction at the London College of Printing.

Having discovered Mark Rothko, she explored color through painting private commissions, but it was with a camera that she realized she could truly capture her unique world and communicate it to others.

Following a meeting with Wolfgang Tillmans, Marialuisa began exploring different ways of capturing the color spectrum on film. This exploration, combined with a move to Los Angeles, led to her first major body of work, “Maranatha”, the serene colors of which have become increasingly popular with collectors.

Her career exploded when she produced the White Series in late 2007. The level of response to this work led to an invitation to exhibit at the prestigious LA Photo Show in January 2008. Interviewed by a number of publications and finishing as one of the show's best-selling artists, she was clearly the rising star of the show.
